Yes…the new year is time to set goals and challenges, and here is one I’ve set for myself.

In case you haven’t figured it out, I am slightly obsessed with winter, and by far, my favourite winter past-time is Cross-Country Skiing.  I went out for a nice 15km ski on Saturday and I can’t even begin to tell you how much I loved every minute of it. Last winter, I skied through my pregnancy, and was convinced that even in my tummy Max was loving it!. Think sticking a basketball down your shirt and trying to ski.   To me skate skiing feels like flying. It may be the most awkward motion in the world with your legs going in one direction and your arms in another (think rubbing your tummy and patting your head), but once you get the technique down, it is magical, and there is no better way to spend a winter day than gliding through the woods after a fresh snowfall.  I’ll have my chariot ski pull soon, and I can’t wait to test it out with Max.

One of the most amazing things about living in Ottawa is being so close to Gatineau Park.  Gatineau Park has some of the best trails I’ve ever been on: With over 200 km of classic trails, 100 km of skate trails and 45 km of backcountry ski trails, it is a skiers paradise.  There are 10 warming shelters, the grooming is great, and the season pass price is very reasonable.

So…in an effort to explore and ski this amazing park, my goal is to head out from every parking trailhead open in the winter and write a review about what its like to ski from that specific spot.    When I moved to Ottawa, I was never sure where to go for the type of skiing I wanted to do….hills? flat? night?. Hopefully this will answer some of these questions for you, and will help encourage me to explore all the wonderful trails out there and also get me in shape for the Gatineau Loppet!
